What are fractional shares?

Fractional shares, also known as partial shares, let you buy a portion of a single share of stock. Instead of needing hundreds of dollars to buy a single share of a high-priced company like Apple or Google, you can invest as little as $1 – making investing accessible to everyone. Combined with our $0 account minimum, it’s easy to get started!

Which stocks and ETFs are available for fractional shares trading?

We have hundreds of U.S. stocks and ETFs available for fractional shares trading and the list is growing. When fractional shares become available for a stock or ETF,  it will be displayed on the quote page so you can easily find this information for the  securities you’re interested in. 

Which account types are eligible for trading fractional shares investing?

You can buy and sell fractional shares in any self-directed account type at Questrade. Learn more about our available account types.

How do fractional shares work?

When you buy a fractional share, Questrade purchases the necessary portion of a share on your behalf. Your account will reflect your ownership percentage of the whole share—so if you buy 50% of a share your position would show as 0.5 shares. Dividends are paid proportionally to your ownership, and you can buy or sell your fractional shares just like whole shares.

Which accounts can I buy and sell fractional shares in?

You will be able to buy and sell fractional shares in all accounts.

Will it be available for U.S. equities?

Yes, you will be able to buy and sell U.S. equities and ETF fractional shares just like whole shares! Canadian fractional shares will be available soon after launch.

Can fractional shares be transferred in-kind?

Right now, fractional shares can’t be transferred in-kind from one brokerage to another. If you decide to move your investments to another platform, you’ll need to either buy enough to make them whole shares, or sell them and transfer the cash.

Can fractional shares be journaled?

As of right now, you can’t journal fractional shares between different exchanges for dual-listed securities.

Can I buy fractional shares of Over-the-Counter (OTC) stocks?

Fractional shares will be available for a wide selection of popular U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs. This includes all stocks in the S&P 500 and NASDAQ 100, the top 100 ETFs by assets, and the top 50 American Depositary Receipts by volume. While OTC stocks aren't included initially, we plan to expand the list of available securities in the future.

What types of orders can I use with fractional shares?

You can easily buy and sell fractional shares using market orders, which are executed at the current market price. These orders are valid for the day they are placed. (Please note that limit orders are not supported for fractional shares at this time.) If you place a Day order outside of regular trading hours, your order will be queued for the following trading day.

When will fractional shares be available on all Questrade platforms?

We're working hard to bring fractional shares to all Questrade platforms. We'll be sure to announce when they launch on other platforms, so stay tuned for updates!

How do I know if a fractional share will pay dividends?

If a stock or ETF pays dividends, you'll receive a dividend amount that's proportional to your fractional shareholding. It works just like receiving dividends on full shares.

Are there different commission fees for fractional shares compared to full shares?

Great news! At Questrade, both fractional and full shares are commission-free.

Is there a minimum investment amount required for fractional shares?

You can start investing with fractional shares for as little as $1. And when you're ready to sell, you can sell your fractional shares for as little as one cent. This makes it easy to invest any amount you're comfortable with.

How are dividends paid on my fractional shares?

Dividends on fractional shares are paid just like regular dividends. They'll be automatically added to your account's cash balance.
